Four elk hunters founded RMEF on May 14, 1984 in Troy, Montana. At that time there were approximately 550,000 elk in North America. Since then, RMEF and its partners completed nearly 14,000 conservation and hunting heritage projects that conserved or enhanced more than 8.6 million acres. Those projects also opened or improved public access to more than 1.5 million acres of land. And today, the North American elk population numbers more than 1.1 million.
