Some people may not know it but there are wild, free-ranging elk in North Carolina and now is a great time to see them in person.
“The bulls are bugling. They are fighting with each other. The females are all grouped up tight together,” Joe Yarkovich, Great Smoky Mountains National Park wildlife biologist, told WATE-TV. “The leaves start to change. The air is a bit cooler, all in all a really nice time to be out with the elk.”
The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation provided funding to support the successful reintroduction of elk onto their historic Great Smoky Mountains range in 2001.
