Elk NetworkCow Elk, Calf Rescued after Falling into Window Well

When you live in the West, it’s not so surprising to look out a window and see elk. But what if your bedroom is below ground level in the basement?

A boy in Park City, Utah, heard a thud in the night and looked out his window only to see two elk just a few inches away looking back at him. A cow and calf apparently both took a tumble in the darkness of the night and fell into the deep window well.

“Kind of crazy situations that we deal with,” Wes Alexander, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR)  biologist, told KSL-TV. “With deer, usually we’re able to get them out with just manpower, but elk are so heavy, we’re really lucky they had the equipment to lift them out.”

The homeowner called friends who own towing and excavating businesses so they had the equipment needed. DWR placed a piece of plywood between the glass and the elk, tranquilized the animals, lifted them to safety and released them in a remote location.
